Day 13 Turning West

Farewell to Chicago

Ellen, Chuck & I went to the gym this morning.  I felt the painful reality of lack of workouts and (too) much great food. Steve did a 6 mile run along the Lakeshore and we all felt righteous as we ate breakfast.

We reconfigured our massive amount of baggage and reorganized for the next leg of the trip and were off the ground by 1:30. The flight was bumpy but I was able to read the Sunday NY Times and do some doll part stuffing. Nothing of note happened on this flight.

Windmills in Western Fields
We left Chicago, flew across Illinois, past Rock Island, crossed the Mississippi River into Iowa over Dubuque, and across Iowa, over Omaha, Nebraska, into the capital, Lincoln, home of the Cornhuskers. Lincoln was originally named Lancaster but renamed for President Lincoln shortly after he was assassinated. It was named one of the healthiest cities in the US in 2008.

We also passed over the Missouri River. We saw fields of windmills and it  was good to see how many places are using this form of energy.

Crossing the Mississippi
Hello Lincoln

We landed in Lincoln, Nebraska about 4:30. The Holiday Inn picked us up at general aviation. The good thing and the bad thing about our hotels is that they all look alike. This makes it seem more homelike and familiar. This hotel offered a "happy hour with free drinks and food" which turned out to be free Bud light and mini hot dogs. The bar was jam packed. We are considering a movie for this evening if we can walk there and stay awake. For tonight's gourmet delight we are in cow country and have two recommendations, all beef.

  1. Mom, your commentary is humorous, educational, and fasinating, and the photos are inspiring. It sounds like you and dad are having a great time. Well done!
